Governor Darius Ishaku today received Representatives of the OXFAM, an European Union support organization with an aim of helping states grow small scale farming.
Governor Ishaku addressing them said “We have all the climatic zones in Taraba state and all chains of Agricultural produce. Our focus was to be on rice in 2018 and we are concentrating on it because 8billion goes out of Nigeria annually just for rice and we can reduce a good number of it by engaging in rice farming”.
Ishaku said the land to cultivate are available but the only problem is getting the people to develop it and assured that he will work towards it. He further said all the companies who receive rice in Kano are from Taraba through trucks from Karim Lamido, Lau etc.
“We should have started earlier but the challenges faced especially on security made it very impossible to start but we are beginning to attract more farmers back to the farm”, he said.
He however assured them of total support in realising the success of the project.
Speaking, leader of the delegation said they have a target of about 26-30 thousand house hold farmers, this he said will be targeted at fisherman, livestock farmers, etc with over 10 million Euros. It is expected to cover the three senatorial zones of the state with centers in Zing, Kurmi, Takum for the first phase.
