Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba under the auspices of Taraba State Government and the Ministry of Women affairs and Child Development marked the commemoration of the “International day of the Girl Child” in Taraba State yesterday at the Howai Primary and Secondary School Mile Six, Jalingo.
The event which took place at the premises of the IDPs camp within the school had the presence of the Wife of the State Governor, Barr. Mrs. Anna Ishaku, (founder of the Hope Afresh Foundation) alongside with the Wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Jellason. The International Day of the Girl Child was set up by the United Nation in 2006 to safeguard the rights of the girl child and is being celebrated over the world. As a result of the devotion to this cause, the Wife of the Governor delivered food items such as bags of rice, cartons of oil, cartons of Indomie noodles and other food items to the IDPs camp.
In her Address, Barr. Anna said the Taraba State Government is passionate about programmes that promote and advance the care of children generally and hence, the reason for marking such a day as this.
“The State Government with NGOs and stake holders will continue together to make your temporary stay here in the IDPs camp worthwhile while you are here and secured. The Federal Government, security agencies and stake holders are also working assiduously round the clock to ensure that peace and tranquility is restored to the various states that has been suffering this insurgencies especially in the north east so that all in the IDPs may return home and rebuild their lives, she said.
In addition, Barr. Mrs. Ishaku said “it should be noted that the Hope Afresh Foundation has treated over one hundred girls and women with cases of malaria, typhoid, skin rashes, hypertension, diabetes, anti-natal and other areas at this very camp during a two day visitation exercise headed by the Nurse of the Health Department of the foundation, Shagba Dorathy Dooshima. There was also distribution of mosquitoes nets and clothes,” she added.
Mrs Comfort Yubuin (founder of the Comfort Foundation), who delivered a lecture on the significance of the Day of Girl Child stated the theme of this year’s international Day of the Girl Child as The Girl before conflict, during conflict and after conflict. She appreciated the efforts of the Rescue Administration through the activities of Governor’s wife in promoting the welfare of children and women in the State.
