Taraba State: Siting of Indiscriminate Filling Stations in Jalingo

The residents of the State Capital have decried the indiscriminate citing of petrol filling station by petroleum marketers. They called on appropriate authority to check the safety of the general public.

A filling station otherwise called gas station is a facility that dispenses various kind of petroleum products and lubricant to all categories of motor vehicles and for household use.

An investigation by taravoices.com reveals that despite all the modern safety guidelines adopted by the operators of gas stations in the course of siting these facilities poses a great threat to residents and the general public.

A visit to Hamaruwa way and road block presents a typical case of indiscriminate citing of filling station which violets the approved guidelines for the constructions of gas station.

Some residents interviewed said the filling stations has exposed them to damages of fire outbreak and other risk associated with it.

They called on the state government and the ministry concern to look in to the matter with view to putting things in the right perspective

When contacted, the state Chairman Independence Petroleum Marketers Alhaji Lukeman Maihanchi said members of the association often site their filling stations where they will enjoy more patronage.

He added that Petroleum Marketers also obtain permission from the ministry concern before constructing a filling station even though they are aware of the danger it poses to residents and the general public.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Secretary Taraba Environmental protection Agency Mr. Julius Butu confirmed that there are alot of dangers attach to siting a filling station in residential areas.

He complained that most the operators do not care to obtain permission from the agency but they go else where to obtain permission.

Mr. Julius Butu adding that the law establishing the agency has been amended in March this year but still awaits the backing of the state government in other to carry out its activities.
