In its concerted efforts at salvaging the environment from desert encroachment and its attendant consequences, the Permanent Secretaries’ Spouses Association, PSSA today conducted a tree planting exercise at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Jalingo.
Speaking at the venue of the event, the wife of the Taraba State Governor, Barr. Anna Darius Ishaku expressed delight over the event stressing that “it is one thing to do something, and another for one to have partners who are willing to support”.
The Governor’s wife who decried the massive destruction of trees stated that the issue of Madrid trees, deforestation and degradation of the land has become a matter of concern as flood and storm are seen as an adverse effect of these activities.
According to her, people have taken Madrid business as a right, stressing that she is an advocate of planting trees rather than uprooting them, therefore her Hope Afresh Foundation is out to support and train people to do the job, as the exercise of planting trees will benefit the forthcoming generation.
Speaking earlier, the President, PSSA who is also the wife of the Head of Service Taraba State, Surveyor Olive Angyu explained that the association which came on board less than two years ago, is made up of Spouses of Permanent Secretaries, Clerk of the House, Executive Secretaries, Christian and Muslim Pilgrim Welfare Boards, Accountant General, Auditor General and Surveyor General.
She said the aim of the association is to support the Government, foster the interest of women and children in the community, as well as support activities of the Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba.
According to her, the environment in Taraba is far from safe due to human activities which include; “incessant felling of trees, mining and bad sharp agricultural practices which leaches all nutrients from the soil”, consequently leading to “fast encroachment of desert conditions and destruction of farmlands.
She added that it is on the basis of the above that the association has decided to partner with the Hope Afresh Foundation to embark on this noble exercise.
Highlights of the event include; a playlet by the National Youth Service Corps members on the dangers of deforestation and the need to embark on massive tree planting, as well as planting of trees conducted by the wife of the Governor.
