It was Warren Buffett who said ‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago’.
The relevance of trees to the environment cannot be over emphasized. The activities of man in the environment such as felling of trees, exposes the environment to hazards that affect the health of the inhabitants, as well as the state of the environment.
Tree planting has contributed immensely to the security of the environment against global warming, droughts, windstorms, floods, and basically harsh weather conditions amongst others.
Planting of trees in our environment, constitutes great advantage to our health but many are ignorant of this fact.
Taraba State lies within the middle of Nigeria with a few mountainous features prominent around the Mambilla Plateau. The irony is that while some citizens of the State around Gembu enjoy the cool temperature, the other citizens in the State Capital, Jalingo and other parts cannot boast of same.
The overall view of Jalingo especially is a large expanse of land with very little vegetation which contributes to the harsh weather and the growth of diseases and viruses in the humid air.
An exposed environment constitutes a major threat to that environment. The activities of man in the environment such as felling of trees, can lead to desertification which is a major cause of hazards which can be physical such as fire, flood, drought and UV radiation from sunlight.
It also causes chemical hazards, biological hazards resulting from interactions from organisms like viruses, bacterial infections etc. A major hazard, is the cultural hazards or lifestyle such as smoking cigarettes, diet, drug use, crime, mode of transportation, exercise, etc.
Tree planting has been said to have its benefits to the environment. Most importantly, it has been beneficial to the health of the inhabitants around. Some of such benefits are;
-Trees help to remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air which cools the earth.
-The addition of trees to a neighbourhood or business district greatly improves the mental and physical health of residents and workers.
-Trees serve as a form of therapy to kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) making them calm and more responsive.
-Trees improve air quality by producing oxygen
-They moderate the effects of sun and wind, thereby cleaning the air by trapping dust, pollen and other pollutants.
-Trees improve the mood of the inhabitants around.
-Trees stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.
In conclusion, it is worthy to note the importance of tree planting in the environment such as canopy trees, palm trees, umbrella tree, neem tree, etc. This can be achieved when there is community effort for every household to plant at least a tree around them and also encourage others. Only then can the tree planting campaign be a success.
