No fewer than four people lost their lives following fresh outbreak of crisis in Suntai ward of Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.
An eyewitness, Mr. Sunday Waave who lost his elder brother, Atim Waave told Taravoices that trouble started on Thursday when two unidentified gunmen shot and killed a youth leader, Nashuka Sambo in Maigoge.
He alleged that following the development, Ichen and Chamba youth in the village acting on suspicion that Tiv youth might be behind the killing, started killing Tiv people in the area.
He added that while efforts were on to stop the escalation of the crisis, some Fulani people joined in the attack, killing at least three people while over a thousand others were displaced in Gazabu, Kungana, Angwan Kpenkpen and Tungwa Bagoni villages.
“Many of those injured are currently receiving treatment in Gazabu and General Hospital Bali. I wonder why any time something happen, people will just take revenge on Tiv people here without verifying or reporting same to the authorities.
“The crisis is a deliberate ploy to scare away our people from farming now that the raining season has come. It is really unfortunate and Government must act fast to restore normalcy,” he lamented.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP David Missal confirmed the attack but said details of the attack were still sketchy, because of the difficulty in accessing the location which is a remote area.
He assured that the command was making adequate arrangement to deploy personnel to the area to arrest the situation.
Our correspondent who visited the area on Sunday reports that villages affected are mostly along the Takum-Jalingo high way, even as hundreds of people especially women and children are currently camping at the Tiv traditional council hall, the Catholic parish and NKST church in Bali town, Taraba State.
