Northern Govs Wives Embark on Drug Awareness and Advocacy Training

In its concerted efforts at fighting the scourge of Drug Abuse in Northern Nigeria, the Northern Governors’ Wives Forum, NGWF, has embarked on a Drug Awareness and Advocacy Training.
The two-day programme, held at the NAF Conference Centre and Suites, Kado-Abuja, was aimed at creating awareness on the dangers of drug abuse as well as equipping participants with adequate knowledge on how to handle the menace.
In an interview with journalists at the Venue of the programme, Wife of Taraba State Governor, Barr. Anna Darius Ishaku noted that awareness and advocacy are very crucial in tackling the menace of drugs because everyone needs to understand that treating drug addiction is more expensive than abstaining from it.
Barr. Anna Ishaku stressed that this fight is a fight for individuals, families, Communities, the State and Organisations as it is important for youths and all involved to say ‘No to Drugs’ and ‘Yes to Life’.
Speaking on her role so far, she said, “we have gone round the various zones to carry out this awareness, we will also go round the various Local Government Areas so that this advocacy will be sustained within families and Communities”.
She further added that her Foundation will partner with the United Nations, the State Government, International Organisations and others to build Rehabilitation Centres in the State to aid the treatment of drug addicts instead of going outside the State to get help.
Speaking during the programme, the Wife of the President, Haj. Aisha Buhari who was represented by the Wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mrs Gimbiya Yakubu Dogara commended the Forum for putting together such a touching and all encompassing programme.
She called on the Ministry of Education to include the teaching of Drug Abuse in Schools Curriculum so as to educate children at a tender age on the dangers of getting involved in it.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairperson NGWF, Haj. Asmau Abdulazeez Yari stated that the programme is aimed at building up participants overall understanding of Drug Abuse and addiction as well as engaging participants in the Forum’s goal of addressing the menace of Drugs in the North and Nigeria at large.
She further stressed that the programme will ensure that Nigerians are adequately and appropriately equipped to make drug-free choices thereby improving the overall health of the people as well as their productivity and quality of life.
Also speaking at the event, the Wife of the Senate President, Dr. Toyin Bukola Saraki commended the NGWF for the courage to tackle such a long existing problem.
According to her, every youth is valuable, saying the programme is not just a good start, but an inspiration to other States in Nigeria, calling on School teachers and Health workers to be trained as counsellors to tackle the menace.
The Programme featured Paper Presentations by professionals on Drug Abuse, Commonly Abused Drugs, How Drugs Work on Addicted Brains amongst others as well as goodwill messages delivered by various individuals and Organisations.
The event was attended by Representatives of State Government’s, Special Advisers, Permanent Secretaries, Directors from Ministries of Health, Education, Youths and Sports, Women Affairs and Child Development among others.
