Day one of the sensitization programme took place in Ussa Local Government area of Taraba state on Monday, 24th April 2017 at the Local Government Secretariat, started with a courtesy visit to the Chief Palace, Kwe Lissam of Ussa, His Highness Danjuma Shitta.
Her Excellency in highlighting the message of the visit to his Highness stated the need for the fight against drug abuse as Taraba has a high rate of victims, mostly the youths.
The rally commenced with Her Excellency’s speech on the theme of the mission stating “SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE.”
The Managing Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Peter Odaudo gave a lecture of the definition of drugs, its effects and signs of drug abuse. A drug is any substance that affects the body’s functions or alters mood. He said a drug is abused when it is used without a medical prescription.
He also spoke on some effects of Drug abuse as Memory loss, high blood pressure, hallucination, kidnapping, cultism etc.
A representative of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and control (NAFDAC), Mrs Nanre Ishaya also gave a brief on the causes of drug abuse. She highlighted that the mandate of the agency was to preserve the health of the nation and as such collaborations with NGOs like Hope Afresh Foundation in the awareness of drug abuse, are key to curbing the scourge.
Day Two of the Rally on the drug abuse mission took place at the Local government Secretariat Baissa, Kurmi. This was held yesterday Tuesday the 25th April 2017, starting from the palace of the Chief of Kurmi, Afa Kuti Samaila Mai Wuya.
Barr. Anna Ishaku who reiterated on the menace of drug abuse said it is a disease that is eating away on the future of our youths as it has shown to affect youths adversely.
In addition, Her Excellency outlined the possibility of a Rehabilitation centre in the state as it will go a long way in curtailing the problem. TheseCentress will be in the Northern, southern and central zones respectively.
