Unknown gunmen on Saturday night killed a Tiv traditional ruler, Zaki Bernard Zaakaa and his four-year-old daughter Mimidoo Bernard, in his house in Gazabu Village of Bali Local Government.
A relation of the deceased, Mr. Jacob Tyozua told Journalists on the phone that, the gunmen numbering three stormed the house of Zaki Bernard Zaakaa at around 7:05 pm and shot at him, killing him and his four-year-old daughter.
Tyozua explained that the Late Bernard had just returned home from an outing moments before the gunmen who rode on a motorcycle stormed the house and opened fire on him, killing him and his daughter instantly, while one other sustained injury and was rushed to the hospital.
“We are suspecting Fulani militia because the Late Chief was a member of Peace committee representing Tiv in Bali “A” ward and some of the Fulanis have been complaining his insistence that all land seized from Tiv during the 2014/2015 crisis in the area be returned to them as directed by the Governor.
“I want to believe that they have decided to kill him to scare others who will want to insist on the recovery of the pieces of land they have seized from our people.
“Just yesterday (Saturday) at about 3:00 pm, the Police in Gazabu ordered a Fulani man to pay N45, 000 as compensation to a Tiv man in a case which the Police found the Fulani man wanting. The Late Chief was following the case among other cases as a traditional ruler and was killed four hours later, so we strongly suspect the Fulanis,” he said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Misal confirmed the incident saying a Tiv man and daughter were killed in Gazabu village of Bali Local Government, while one other sustained injury and was rushed to the hospital.
Missal who said he cannot confirm whether the man was a Traditional Ruler, however, said an investigation into the killing was ongoing.
