Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Wednesday urged Governors in the Northeast to use sports to promote peace in the region.
Northeast Vice Chairman of the Association, Alhaji Sadiq Moyoyo, made the call at the 53rd anniversary of the Association in Jalingo.
The vice Chairman noted that sports development was key in uniting the people especially for the people of the Northeast after many years of insurgency in the region.
“I want to call on the Governors of the Northeast zone of the Country to prioritise sports development in order to engage large number of youth and promote peace and unity.
” Sports is one of the best unifying factors known to man at the moment due to its capacity to make people forget their animosity against each other,” he said.
On his part, Taraba State SWAN Chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Jalingo, called on Government at all levels to revive annual Primary and Secondary School games to enhance sports development.
He noted that such games were avenues to discover talents at the early stage to represent the Country at International Sports Competitions.
“I want to call on Government at all levels to ensure the revival of primary and secondary school games in the country.
” This, I believe remains the best way to discover talents in good time for sports development,” he noted.
Kabiru urged members of the association to redouble their efforts in ensuring adequate coverage of grassroots sports activities to enhance its development.
